Hypothalamus

So, last night at our monthly Dinner with Doc, I talked briefly about chiropractic and the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is in the brain and its main job is to keep our bodies in a normal state. It is also the area of the brain that controls our response to any form of stress (chemical, emotional, physical). Recent research has finally found the link to why people have a positive response to chiropractic adjustments on their bodies functions. Past research shows immediate drops in blood pressure and immediate increases in immune responses following chiropractic adjustments. The answer to that question is the Hypothalamus.

Its nice when science confirms things that we have believed as true, its even nicer to finally have one answer to the 1000's of questions we have about how our bodies work. So, what this study basically says is when a chiropractic adjustment is done, signals are sent to the hypothalamus, these signals tell the hypothalamus to shut off the bodies stress response. This in turn lowers ones blood pressure, decreases heart rate, decreases blood sugars, increases immune response, increases digestion and many more positive things for our body. One big advantage is it slows and/or stops the production of Cortisol, the "stress hormone". Cortisol is secreted by the adrenal glands when we are under stress (any of the 3 types of stress), high levels of cortisol for a sustained amount of time can lead too :

  • Rapid weight gain mainly in the face, chest, and abdomen contrasted with slender arms and legs.

  • A flushed and round face

  • High blood pressure

  • Osteoporosis

  • Skin changes (bruises and purple stretch marks)

  • Muscle weakness

  • Mood swings, which show as anxiety, depression or irritability

  • Increased thirst and frequency of urination.

  • Lack of sex drive (men), period problems in woman

So, look around where you are right now, look at the people you see around you, we are living in a constant state of stress, phyical, emotional and chemical stress. Just look, I bet you see some of the above symptoms right now all around you.

So, doing anything that can help reduce the stress you have everyday will help lower your cortisol levels and bring your body to a better state. Diet, exercise, meditation, reading, hobbies, etc can help lower stress levels. AND getting adjusted regularly can also help greatly change your body to a better state.
